Identity Finder

Protect your identity and privacy

Indiana University is pleased to announce it has acquired a site license for Identity Finder software, which can help you prevent identity theft. Identity Finder is a tool that can search computer systems and find, delete, and secure sensitive data thus reducing the risk of data breaches.

Identity Finder works on Windows XP, Vista, Server 2003, and Mac OS X; a Mac Home Edition client is expected for release in mid 2009. At Indiana University, two versions of Identity Finder are available:

Important Privacy Notice

You may use this tool to search your own data and other files stored in your individual computer accounts on University-owned systems. A technician or administrator may use this tool to search data and other files stored in individual computer accounts on university-owned systems within his or her scope of responsibility if the technician:

  1. has written permission from the individual to whom the account or device has been assigned or attributed, or
  2. has given prior written notification to the individuals that this tool will be used, by whom, for what purpose, and how the resulting information will be used.

The technician should avoid opening the files Identity Finder finds. Instead, send the names of the files found to the owner of the account/system where the files were stored, and direct the owner to review the files and take appropriate action.

For more details, see the Policy on Privacy of Indiana University Information Technology Resources.
